ROXY MUSIC'S COUNTRY LIFE

My take on the iconic 1974 Roxy Music album cover, 'Country Life'.

I've always loved this iconic image of Eveline Grunwald and Constanze Karoli taken by Eric Bowman. Scroll down to see the original image.

The two German girls were apparently fans and met the band in a bar. They agreed to do the shoot when Roxy Music's original models fell through.

The title ‘Country Life’ was named after the British magazine for the gentry and Brian Ferry wanted a tongue in cheek contrast to the usual wholesome, staid photographs that sported the cover. It proved to be quite controversial and was censored in some parts of the world. Early US copies were shrink-wrapped in opaque plastic and then re released with the back cover pic that featured only the trees/bushes.

My original painting was exhibited and sold at The Record Collection show curated by Rick Mereki. Partial benefits going to the Ukraine Crisis Appeal.

Now available here as a limited edition print from A3+ to A0 size.

NORMA JEAN WOFFORD 'THE DUCHESS'

Norma Jean Wofford, nicknamed 'The Duchess' by Bo Diddley, was the second rockin' female guitarist in Bo's band in the 1960's.

The coolest.

POISON IVY RORSCHACH

All hail Poison Ivy Rorschach, co founding mistress of The Cramps and Gretsch slinging queen of rock’n roll.

I’ve been lucky enough to have witnessed The Cramps in Melbourne, London and New York. Their live shows were a hoot- Lux’s hilarious antics contrasted with Ivy’s ice cool badass-ery and guitar prowess.

Her important role was often undermined. “Nobody ever talks to me about music or guitar,” she said. “I’m the queen of rock n’ roll and for this to not to be recognised is pure sexism.”

A4 and A3 Ivy prints are now available in the shop as part of the music icons print range.

ARBORY x FOUR PILLARS

The Arbory Afloat in Melbourne have collaborated with Four Pillars to create a limited edition pink ‘Miami Afloat Gin’ exclusive to their Yarra River bar, featuring one of my illustrations on the label.

The ingredient list includes pineapple sage, orris root, strawberry gum, the peels of orange, lemon and grapefruit and the pink colour is the addition of Davidson Plums.

Unfortunatey the gin is not available to buy but you can taste it exclusively at the Arbory Afloat in Melbourne. I can vouch that it tastes as good as it looks. But be quick, the pink gin party will be over by the end of summer :)

Big thanks to 21-19 for the awesome design and Jacky Winter all things biz.

PLAYBOY FEMLIN

Late last year I received an email from Playboy US asking me to create an updated version of Leroy Neiman’s Femlin. I was beyond excited and flattered. I have always loved Neiman’s mischievous, nymphish character he created for the Party pages of Playboy magazine in 1955 and continued to create in the 60’s and 70’s.

It was so fun to work on this. It’s not often I receive a job where nudity is actually encouraged! And the art directors at Playboy were so lovely to work with.

I’m yet to see it in print but here are some of the images which are in the new quarterly Playboy magazine which launched Jan 18th 2019. Keep your eyes peeled at quality news stands.

LEILANI

Aloha! A new print is in the store and somehow I forgot to post it here! Following on from China Girl, this is Leilani, featuring all things Hawaiian. The name was inspired by the Hoodoo Gurus song of the same name, taken from their classic 80’s debut album, Stoneage Romeos. It’s still a fave of mine. Leilani is a Hawaiian name that means heavenly flower.

My great grandfather lived in Hawaii for sometime and came back to Australia to design and build his home inspired by his travels, complete with palm trees. It was a very unusual design for 1905. He named it Hale Mauka (house on the hill) and it still stands today.

She is available in A3 size up to A0 poster size. Shown below holding the A2 size. Head to the shop for more details.

DITA VON TEESE

I've been doing some time lapse drawing videos over on instagram. It takes a bit of extra time to set up but a lot of fun to watch. Here's some bird watching with the queen of burlesque, Dita Von Teese. Drawn in a flash!

BUILT TO SPILL

I recently had the pleasure of designing a poster for Built To Spill's latest Australian tour by Feel Presents. Built to Spill are an American indie rock band that formed in the 90's and are touring their latest album, 'Untethered Moon'. I wanted to go with a comic book cover space theme. I always love to be able to combine my love of illustration and hand drawn type, and even better a space girl. Inspired by the lovely Jean Shrimpton.
